Back Pain Treatment & Management

Back problems are very common but may have different causes.

Mostly the pain in the lower back is the result of an excessive sedentary life with poor posture, long hours behind the wheel, a sudden overload of exercise at the gym or gardening. This can cause a muscle imbalance, strain on the ligaments and pressure on the joints.

Here some Tips to prevent Back Problems

  • Check your desk and car seat
  • Sit with your bum as far back on the seat as possible
  • Warm up/cool down before and after exercise (even gardening)
  • Strengthen your core and bum muscles
  • Take regular breaks from sitting
  • Lift safely using your legs
  • Keep active and exercise regularly
  • Avoid excessive weight

If the back already hurts

  • Use ice for very acute pain and heat for muscle pain
  • Use a cushion in the lower back as support
  • Alternate resting lying down to small walks
  • If you feel like you are losing control of your bowl or bladder, contact your GP

Our Physiotherapy Treatments for Spinal Conditions

Physiotherapy helps to identify the cause of your spinal disorder, mobilise and regenerate the nerve(s) and the spine, strengthen the back muscles, and teach you how to avoid movements or activities, which could lead to relapses.

Our expert therapists will thoroughly assess you to find the best way to treat your back condition taking in consideration your goals and your lifestyle. The primary goal is to ease the pain, as well as to recognise the cause of it and then try to make the changes to avoid relapses. This could be achieved by using manual therapy and mobilisation supported by dry needling, Kinesio taping, electrotherapy. The therapist will then aim to increase the function of your back by analysing your posture and movements and suggesting exercises tailored to your needs to help you return to what you like doing.  We are also happy to help you optimise your workstation or the sit in your car. If you are not feeling confident to go back to the gym or your sports,  Jack Nicholson – Swiss Physio will design a training plan for you to help you in the transition in our Physio lead Personal Training sessions | Better Body Fitness Programme | Swiss Performance | swissphysio

When appropriate we use a computerised Back Scan to help visualise the functional movement of your spine and highlight problematic area. We will also guide you to a gradual return to your normal activities. People suffering of chronic back pain also report to find remedial massages very beneficial to ease the pain.
