Acupuncture

Acupuncture aims to encourage our natural healing mechanisms by restoring the body to a state of equilibrium.

Your practitioner will look not only at your presenting symptoms but will take into account many areas of your current and past health to determine the underlying imbalance at the root of your problem. They will then formulate a treatment involving the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of qi, your body’s vital energy.

For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked, which can result in some symptoms of pain and illness. In certain instances, traditional acupuncture can be an effective therapy to help restore balance and promote physical and emotional harmony.

what to expect

During an initial consultation and treatment which lasts 90 minutes, you’ll be asked to outline the main symptoms of conditions you are wishing to treat with acupuncture in your own words. After that, you’ll be asked about your medical history and each aspect of your general health including sleep, ifestyle, digestion and diet.

Once the questions have finished, the practitioner will listen to your pulse and look at your tongue which will help to understand how the qi in the body is working and select appropriate points.

Depending on the condition being treated, the practitioner may choose to do some massage, gua shaor cupping before the acupuncture treatment. After that, very fine needles will be placed along the acupuncture channels of the body (legs and arms, sometimes abdomen, torso and head) and retained while you relax for 20 minutes. Then, needles will be removed and the session will be brought to a close, including discussion of any potential lifestyle advice and arrangement of future appointments
