Whiplash
Strain of the ligaments, vertebrae or spinal cord mainly in the cervical area (neck), caused by sudden jerking back of the head and neck. Mainly happens to drivers or passengers of a car when hit from behind. Whiplash is an injury of soft tissue causing pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulders but sometimes also in the lower back. If not treated, symptoms can often last for months.
Physiotherapy can help reducing the pain and regaining the movement first with very gentle techniques. Later strength and control of the muscles with increasingly intense stabilising exercises will follow. Postural correction is also important. Electrotherapy, acupuncture/dry needling and spacific application of Kinesio tape are often used to complement the treatment.
