Ankle sprains, swelling and instability

A “twisted ankle”, bad shoe wear and heavy, or weakness of the ligaments and muscles can lead to an unstable joint. This can results in frequent “tripping over” on uneven ground, swelling and an unsafe feeling when asked to stand on one foot.

Even more, the foot is the base of our body. Weak ankles may affect the way we are standing causing problems to the joints above, could these be knees – hips or lower back.

Physiotherapy can help to reinforce all the structures around the ankle and optimise muscle strength and your gait with foot exercises, balancing exercises, video analysis of your gait and running style and if needed with special strapping or supports. Electrotherapy, kinesio taping and dry needling can also be used to reduce the swelling and muscle strains.
